Before you develop a retirement strategy, you should have a clear understanding of your goals and objectives. Factoring in your financial goals is important, but what do you need your funds to accomplish in retirement? In general, would you like to spend every cent of your nest egg? Or would you like to leave enough for a legacy when you retire? Your goals should generally fall into one of these categories—to grow the value of your portfolio, reach a specific portfolio value, to maintain the value of your portfolio relative to inflation over time or to spend everything in the portfolio. Many investors' goals generally fall into one of these categories: To grow the value of your portfolio as much as possible, to reach a specific portfolio value, to maintain the value of your portfolio relative to inflation over time, or to spend everything in the portfolio.
